How to Verify a Used Phone Is Not Stolen Before You Buy

6 min read

The fastest way to lose money on a used phone is to skip the checks. This pre-purchase checklist walks through the three lookups that separate a safe deal from a stolen device.

Step 1 — Get the real IMEI

Ask the seller for the IMEI, then confirm it matches the phone in person (dial *#06#). Our IMEI finder guide covers every method.

Step 2 — Blacklist check

Run the GSMA Blacklist Check. If the IMEI is flagged, the phone is reported lost or stolen — stop here.

Step 3 — Activation lock check (Apple)

For any iPhone or iPad, run the iCloud Activation Lock Check. A locked device cannot be activated under your account, no matter how low the price.

Step 4 — Full IMEI check

Finish with the Full IMEI Check for device identification, blacklist and carrier/SIM-lock details in one report. This is your final sanity check.

Red flags to walk away from

  • "Just sign in with my Apple ID" — classic activation-lock dodge.
  • "It only needs a new SIM" — usually hides a blacklist flag.
  • Seller refuses to share the IMEI before meeting.
  • Price far below similar unlocked models.
Rule of thumb: a 1-credit lookup is always cheaper than a blocked, stolen phone. When in doubt, check first and pay later.

Bottom line

Blacklist + activation lock + full IMEI check is the complete safety net. Run all three with the Full IMEI Check and the two focused tools above before any payment.
