What Does a “Clean” IMEI Mean?

4 min read

"Clean IMEI" is the phrase every seller uses — but it only confirms one thing, and buyers often over-read it. Here is exactly what it means.

What a clean IMEI confirms

A clean IMEI is not on the global GSMA blacklist. That means the device is not reported lost, stolen or carrier-blocked. Verify it with the GSMA Blacklist Check.

What a clean IMEI does NOT confirm

  • It does not prove the phone is unlocked (SIM/carrier lock is separate).
  • It does not prove it is free of iCloud activation lock.
  • It does not prove the model matches what is advertised.

For activation lock, run the iCloud Activation Lock Check. For the complete picture, use the Full IMEI Check.

Bottom line

"Clean" means not blacklisted — nothing more. Always pair it with a lock check before you buy.
